Lions Launch Disaster Funds to Help Provide Local and International Relief

Lions Launch Disaster Funds Helping Provide Local and International Relief

We are delighted to announce that Lions Clubs International is running two disaster funds which will enable Lions to provide appropriate relief as soon as any tragic events occur. The Lions Community Disaster Fund and The Lions International Disaster Fund are two initiatives that we are very pleased to support. Over the coming months we will be doing all we can to raise awareness about the need for donations from Lions Clubs and the general public.

The Lions Community Disaster Fund has been established so that Lions can act quickly when disasters occur within England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Funds raised will be used to help us provide the right kind of support to those in need. Over the years we have assisted with many community disasters and most recently we helped to provide relief to victims of the winter floods.

The Lions International Disaster Fund will work in a similar way, but funds will be used to help deal with disasters around the world. Funds raised will enable us to act promptly when a disaster occurs. Our aim is to assist those in need as swiftly as possible. We have great experience providing humanitarian support, having helped those in Haiti following the devastating 2010 earthquake and also those in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan which was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded.

Lions South East Charities Treasurer Thomas Berry commented: “Lions across the South East and beyond are working together to highlight the importance of growing these funds so that immediate action can be taken when a significant national or international disaster occurs. Lions can deliver support so long as the essential funds are in place. For example, Lions were able to supply aid in the form of water purification systems to those requiring clean water in the Philippines.

“Through our experience we understand how essential it is that funds are readily available when a disaster happens so that we can take immediate action, rather than having to delay relief efforts while fundraising takes place. We hope to build both of these funds up over the coming months. Funds will enable us to provide support promptly after a tragic event takes place and they will also allow us to assist with longer term recovery in disaster areas.”
