Prostate Day Success

Prostate Cancer Screening day a great successThanks to Uckfield Lions Club

To help mark Uckfield Lions Clubs Centennial year, a free prostate screening day, in association with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO) was recently held at the Belmont Centre in Uckfield. This was the first time Uckfield Lions had provided this service to men living in Uckfield and surrounding areas.

The screening was undertaken by qualified phlebotomists, with 110 men attending. Each completed a questionnaire and had blood samples taken. Samples have now been sent away to a hospital where the testing will be overseen by a Consultant Urologist and the results will be returned to the patients in about a fortnight.

Advice will be given to the patient appropriately using a red, amber and green traffic light system. In certain situations patients will be encouraged to visit their medical practice for further advice. As the Prostate Specific Antigen test is not specific for Prostate Cancer, it is not always widely used in medical practices. Therefore, Uckfield Lions and PCaSO were very pleased to offer this service to men living in the area. Statistics show that one in two men will have a prostate problem at some time in their life.
